Community Helpers ~ Franklin

Throughout the month of March our curriculum unit focused on “Our Community” ~ The Town of Franklin and Community Helpers The children we very excited to learn that we ALL live in Franklin (even some of the teachers)!

During circle time we talked about all the different places around town (e.g., schools, town common, parks, playgrounds, restaurants, etc.).  We also shared some of our favorite activities to do in our community (e.g., visiting the library, mailing letters at the post office, swimming at the pond, eating at McDonald’s, getting ice cream at Spruce Pond Creamery and hiking in Franklin forest).
There are many different people who live and work in our community.  The children were very excited to share personal stories about their “community helper” family members.

Home/School Connection
“Where in the Community am I?”
This guessing game is a fun way to help your child discover the kinds of businesses that make up your community.  Begin by choosing a place that your child is familiar with (i.e. grocery store, fire station).  Tell him/her, “I’m visiting a place in our town.  Can you guess where I am?”  Give clues/hints about each of the locations (e.g., “This is a place where we go to buy fruits and vegetables”.  “We can push a shopping cart”.)  Once your child figures out the location you are describing, have them take a turn!!

Stay Tuned…Next Month

Throughout the month of April we will be exploring a new curriculum unit “Weather and Climate”.  During circle we will learn about all different types of Weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, stormy, windy, etc.) and the changes that occur during the Spring Time (flowers bloom, rain showers, leaves grow on the trees, green grass grows, etc.).   We will also be exploring the change of season using all our senses (Hear - birds chirping, See - trees bud, flowers bloom, Feel – the warm or chilly breeze, Smell – flowers).

Theme ~ Woodland Animals
Throughout this month we will be learning all about “Woodland Animals”.  Some topics of discussion will include, learning about different animal characteristics such as size (small or large), color (brown fur, blue feathers, stripes, etc.) and type of body cover (fur or feathers).  Different animal habitats (i.e. where an animal lives – in a tree, on the ground, under the ground, etc.) as well as what animals like to eat and what happens during the cold winter months.

The children will have numerous opportunities to participate in many theme related activities such as, Woodland Animal Memory, “Animal Sounds” listening BINGO game, drawing woodland animal scenes, creating a woodland mural, making animal puppets, building animal homes and much, much more!!
