Author Study ~ Don and Audrey Wood

Don & Audrey Wood ~ Author Study
December 2017

This week we are wrapping up our Author Study unit ~ Don and Audrey Wood!  We learned about the role of an Author (a person who writes and creates stories) and an Illustrator (the person who draws the pictures in a story).  We also talked about how some Authors are Illustrators too!  Don and Audrey Wood share the role and often write and illustrate their stories together.  I think our classroom favorite was The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the BIG Hungry Bear!

Other favorites included, The Napping House, Piggies and Silly Sally.  We also read Quick as A Cricket which was a wonderful story to introduce the children to OPPOSITES!

Ask you child to tell you what the opposite of the words BIG, HEAVY, WET, UP, DARK, FAST, and SHORT are?

For Piggies we made a picture of two hands.  On the end of each finger was a piece of velcro to attach piggies.  Each child picked a question/task card that had a question and two picture choices.  If they answered correctly they picked a pig and placed on the end of one finger.  Some questions included, “Show me two piggies”; “Which piggie in not dirty?”;  Show me the piggie who is clean. Which piggie is happy?” This activity worked on following directions, taking turns, responding to questions, understanding linguistic concepts (big, little, happy, sad, clean, dirty, short, long, etc), as well as comprehending negatives ("The piggie who is not dirty").

Miss Kelty was our "Guest Reader" one day last week!  She read us one of her favorite Don and Audrey Wood books, King Bidgood's in the Bathtub.  We all really enjoyed this silly story!
Thank you Miss Kelty for always making reading extra fun!

Motor Room
Written by:  Miss Joanne
The Motor room this month is following the author study theme of Audrey and Don Wood.   Children acted out the silly motor skills from Silly Sally such as leaping, forward rolls, jumping like a frog and walking backwards. The students also worked on their postural strength by using scooter boards (on their belly) to place seeds on the strawberry from The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and The Big Hungry Bear. They used what we are calling the “Silly Sally Swing” to work on belly and leg strength.
Ask your child what motor station they liked the best!!
