The Arctic and Polar Animals

Preschool News ~ January 2018
Throughout the month of January our unit will focus on The Arctic and Polar Animals.  A perfect theme for this cold, snowy month!!  During our group discussions we learned some interesting facts about the Arctic.  First, the Arctic is located at the northernmost part of the planet.  Second, the Arctic is VERY cold and lastly, the Arctic is home to many amazing wildlife including polar bears, foxes, rabbits (snowshoe hares), birds, walruses, seals and whales.

We read two stories, Polar Opposites (by Erik Brooks) and In Arctic Waters (by Laura Crawford).  After we read the stories we talked about what makes Polar Animals different from other animals.  For example, brown bears hibernate during the winter months to stay warm but polar bears do not.  We also learned that polar bears have black skin to absorb hear and white fur to blend (camouflage) in with their environment.  A polar bears fur is thicker than any other bears’ and covers their feet for warmth and traction on ice.  Polar bears also love to be in the water and are excellent swimmers.

Check out these "Live Cams" at www.explore.org and see if you can spot a Polar Bear or other Arctic Animal in their natural habitats!
